Computerized Farm Financial Recordkeeping


All instruction will be presented in a hands-on teaching style with participants performing the tasks being demonstrated by the instructors. Participants, therefore, should have a basic familiarity with using a computer and typing on a computer keyboard.

Instruction on computerized recordkeeping in this workshop will begin with the basics, no prior computerized recordkeeping experience is necessary. However, some prior experience with a hand-kept, single-entry accounting system (such as the extension blue book) would be useful. At a minimum, participants should have experience with keeping a check ledger (preferably one periodically reconciled with bank statements).

Participants will receive instruction on:

  • Setting up and starting your records.
  • Developing a chart of accounts (categories) to key income and expense transactions to.
  • Entering transactions into the ledger (single transactions and transactions split between multiple categories and classes).
  • Tagging income and expenses to enterprises.
  • Retrieving information in the form of vaious reports (including transaction reports and reports that are sorted and filtered according to vaious criteria).
  • Dealing with term loans, such as a car loan, land loan, equipment loan, etc.
  • Reconciling with the bank statement.
  • Backing up and archiving data.
  • Using information fom your farm records to generate a cash flow balance sheet and income statement.
  • Analyzing your farm using standard financial ratios.

Please note: Pre-registration is required before March 23! Space is limited, so register early! If the workshop fills up, participation will be based on date registration is received with payment in the extension office. Registration fees will be returned to people turned away due to space limitations and those canceling prior to the registration deadline.
