Dodge County 4-H Geocaching

On March 16,2006 the Dodge County 4-H Program became the proud owner of it's first Geocaching Box, The Dodger! With in the first couple weeks of placement (even with the 1-2 ft of snow that came down) we still had five geocachers find it. As of February 2008, The Dodger has logged forty-six visitors and hosted eleven travel bugs and two geocoins.

Geocaching (You pronounce it Geo-cashing, like cashing a check) is an entertaining adventure game for global positioning systems (GPS) users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the features and capability of a GPS unit. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something from the cache they should leave something for the cache.

The Dodge County Extension Office has GPS units available to check out to 4-H clubs or 4-Hers looking to try a scavenger hunt with modern technology. There are many geocaches in Dodge County and over 2,856 in Nebraska. This is a fun learning experience for all ages.

For more information on Geocaching please visit the website www.geocaching.com. or contact The Dodge County Extension Office.

You can also visit The Dodger where you can check on how many geocachers have found our geocaching box.
